Inherent Safety - An introduction (part-1)

INTRODUCTION TO INHERENT SAFETY An inherently safer design is one that avoids hazards instead of controlling them, particularly by Removing or reducing the amount of hazardous material in the plant or the Number of hazardous operations. The best way of dealing with a hazard is to remove it completely.\ As Lees (1996 ) has said the aim should be to design the process and plant so that they are inherently safer. Inherent safety was first widely expressed in the late I970's by Trevor KJetz. The basic principles are common sense and include avoiding the use of hazardous materials, minimising the inventories of hazardous materials, and aiming for simpler processes with more benign and moderate process alternatives. THE PRINCIPLES OF INHERENT SAFETY Kletz (1984. 1991) has given Basic Principles of Inherent Safety as follows: 1. Intensification "What you don't have, can't leak." Small inventories of hazardous materials reduce the consequences of leaks. Inventories can of...

What is Fire ?

Fire is a chemical reaction that occurs when a substance (typically a fuel) reacts with oxygen in the presence of heat, resulting in the release of energy in the form of light, heat, and gases. This process is called combustion. The basic components required for fire are often referred to as the "fire triangle," which includes: Heat – A sufficient temperature to start and sustain combustion. Fuel – A material that can burn, such as wood, paper, or gas. Oxygen – A component of the air that supports combustion. When these three elements are present in the right conditions, a fire can be ignited. If any one of these elements is removed, the fire will be extinguished.

What is National Safety Day ?

National Safety Day is observed annually on March 4th in India to promote safety awareness and emphasize the importance of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) practices in workplaces and the community. It marks the foundation day of the National Safety Council (NSC) , which was established in 1966 by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, to enhance safety awareness and foster a proactive culture of safety across the nation. Objectives of National Safety Day: Raise Awareness: To educate people about the significance of preventing accidents and maintaining safety in all aspects of life. Promote Safety Culture: To instill safety consciousness among individuals, organizations, and communities. Encourage Compliance: To promote adherence to safety standards, regulations, and best practices. Prevent Workplace Hazards: To address issues related to workplace safety, occupational health, and environmental protection. Sustain Efforts: To ensure that safety initiat...

JSA - Job Safety Analysis

A Job Safety Analysis (JSA), also known as Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), is a systematic process used to identify potential hazards associated with specific job tasks and implement safety measures to mitigate these risks. In a JSA, a job task is broken down into individual steps, and each step is analyzed to identify possible hazards. The analysis then outlines the control measures needed to minimize or eliminate those hazards, ensuring safer work practices. A JSA is commonly used in industries with high-risk tasks, such as construction, manufacturing, and mining, and is an essential tool for promoting workplace safety and compliance with safety regulations. The benefits include: Identifying hazards and risks before they occur Improving safety awareness and training Reducing workplace accidents and injuries Promoting continuous improvement in safety practices  OISD 105 (Oil Industry Safety Directorate Standard 105) is a standard specifically developed for oil and gas industries in Ind...
